SD-8 Unpacking and Initial Power Up

Please inspect the shipping container for obvious damage. The units are shipped inside a well protected box, but this will not prevent some big elephant from crushing the box if he steps on it. Once you have determined that the unit survived the shipping process the rest is fairly simple.

  1. Unlock and/or open the door to the unit. Remove any extra packing and protective material located inside the enclosure. Confirm that all circuit boards are installed and have not come loose during shipping. This is very unlikely unless the screws holding the boards have become loose in transit.

  2. Select the area in which the unit is to be mounted and securely fasten the unit to a sturdy wall or pole as conditions dictate. Install a 110 volt "/C duplex receptacle box nearby the mounted enclosure of the SD-8. This outlet will be used to provide an 110 volt A/C source for the Power supply which will provide D/C voltage to run the system and to charge the standby battery. The standby battery is located under the two circuit boards mounted to the fiberglass or Polycarbonate enclosure (not easily visible in the SD-8 enclosure.) IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE THE FOUR (4) SCREWS SECURING THE TOP BOARD AND THE BOTTOME BOARD TO THE HOUSEING. These boards are connected together via two connectors; one is a 40-pin connector and the other is a 20-pin connector. Thus it requires a perfect match of 60 pins top to bottom board.

  3. Install the telephone service: Locate the telephone interconnect box. If the box is an RJ-11 (single 4/6 pin plastic connector) select the furnished phone cord which has the two modular plugs on either end of a 6 foot cord. Use this cord. If the interconnect box does NOT have a modular plug, use the furnished cord which has the 4 spade lugs wires (red, green, black, and yellow). Connect the Red to red and the Green to green. Both connections require the other end of the telephone cord from the RJ-11 jack be connected to the female telephone receptacle TOP slot of the dual telephone connector plug. This plug is identified by the symbol "PHONE". The connector from the telephone line is now plugged into the "PHONE" (top side) of the dual connector.

  4. The bottom female plug is labeled "SYS". This lower receptacle is used for the SYSTEM telephone. This is the telephone which is furnished with the SD-8 unit. Plug the telephone cord associated with the furnished "SYS"system telephone into the dual jack marked "SYS". This telephone set is the system telephone,(SYS) and is used only to program the SD-8, not to dial out.

PLUG IN 2 PIN CONNECTOR: Locate the female Molex connector that is attached to a blue and a yellow wire. This Molex connector will plug in only in one place on the board. If unplugged, plug in the 2 pin connector to the male counterpart on the SD-8 MAIN BOARD left side. This is the local speaker for the SD-8.

  5. Confirm that the 4-pin plug with the red white and black wire (4 pin connector) is securely in place in the respective 4 pin connector. (This connector is shown in drawing 1, figure 1).

  6. Then slide the battery slide switch to ON. This black switch is marked BATT Off/On. The switch is located just below the speaker connector described above. (Please refer to drawing 1, figure 1 of SD-8 UNIT located on the last page of this section).

  7. Install the 12 volt power supply into the duplex outlet which is now OFF. Plug in the unattached end from the power supply into the corresponding jack on the outside of the polycarbonate enclosure on the LEFT side of the enclosure.

  8. Turn on the circuit breaker which supplies power to the duplex outlet. The power supply is now supplying 12 volts D/C to the SD-8. The green LED=s defining the power supply condition will now be "ON" (Refer to drawing 1, figure 1). The "POWER CONNECTOR" plug-in connector is located on the main board (drawing 1, figure 1). After the power is connected, the 4 green LED's (marked LED7) on the main board will illuminate.

  9. The system is now fully powered and ready to program. Look at the various IC=s on the board and touch each with your finger to confirm that they are not running hot. This is a precautionary test as it is very unlikely that any are running hot. But, if any one is hot disconnect all power immediately and contact the factory for instructions. Please refer to the programming information booklet for the programming instructions.

  10. This is intended as a brief outline of the system operation. To fully understand the SD-8 it will be necessary to read the entire section on the Operation of the SD-8 included in the O & M Manual which comes with each SD-8 unit.

STARTUP AND INITIAL SETUP VALUES

For your convenience in getting started in the setup process there is a menu which has some preset values and conditions which will allow the system to run initially. These values may be loaded by selecting the MENU position on the MENU/RUN switch (drawing 3 SD-8, figure 7). This will cause the MAIN MENU PROGRAM to operate and say "This is the Main Menu" (drawing 1 SD-8, figure 1). By selecting [7] at the Main Menu prompt and then entering the digit [4] and [4] again. The following preset values are installed.

The preset default values are as follows:

  1. Telephone sequence will dial telephone number 1 and 2, and skip 3 thru 8.

  2. Time delays for the individual channels are as follows:
    Channel 1 = 8 sec Channel 5 = 1 minute
    Channel 2 = 16 sec Channel 6 = 2 minutes
    Channel 3 = 32 sec Channel 7 = 3 minutes
    Channel 4 = 64 sec Channel 8 = 4 minutes

  3. Each channel has an independent second or minute selection. Channels 1 thru 4 are set up for seconds. Channels 5 thru 8 are set up for minutes.

  4. The telephone is set at 4 rings before hang-up.

  5. The time between calls is set at a relative number of 4 this gives a 30 seconds delay. Each count equal approximately 8 seconds.

  6. The call back timer is set at 4 minutes. This is unusually short in the real world but is good for testing the system.

  7. All contacts are set for Normally Open (N/O).

  8. The power fail feature is in the off mode.

Recap: To install the above values enter the Main Menu and select [7], next input [4], and then [4]. The data will be automatically installed. These values may be changed later if required. Each value is independent and can be changed at any time. Do not attempt to enter data anytime the SD-8 is "Talking." The SD-8 will ignore your input.

ASSIGNMENT OF INDIVIDUAL ID CODES

Please assign each individual whose telephone number is on the dialing list a two digit individual ID code which will be used in communication with the SD-8. Each person will have a unique two digit ID code assigned. example: John - "13", Bill - "14", etc.

REMOTE ACCESS IS ACCOMPLISHED TWO WAYS.

  1. You may dial the telephone number assigned to the unit and enter the individual ID code plus the access digit "3." At the next prompt enter the 4 digit Access Code for your unit. EXAMPLE: Dial the telephone number assigned to the system. The system will answer the telephone, identify itself and will request your ID code and response. Wait two seconds after the message and enter "XX3" (XX is any two digit pair of numbers). Using remote access, you have up to twenty-five seconds to input information. If the system receives no response, it will automatically hang-up. The next response from the system will be the same statement, "Please enter your ID code and response." At this prompt, wait two seconds and enter the four digit access code. When this procedure is correctly done, the system will announce that you are at the main menu. From this point, you may proceed as if you were at the site location. You will need to understand how the system works to correctly input information remotely. Please refer to the manual or the Quick Menu.

  2. When the SD-8 calls the telephone numbers on the dialing list, each called party has an opportunity to communicate with the system. To access the main menu when the system initiates the call, at the "Please enter your ID code and response," enter the ID code of the individual, plus the access digit "3." EXAMPLE: The ID code is "14" and the access digit "3." Thus, entering the group of numbers [143] is the first step in remotely accessing the SD-8. When these numbers are entered the voice announcement will say "Please enter your ID code and response". The next response from the system will be the same statement, "Please enter your ID code and response". At this prompt, wait two seconds and enter the four digit access code. When this procedure is correctly done, the system will announce "This is the Main Menu." From this point, you may proceed as if you were at the site location. You will need to understand how the system works to correctly input information remotely. Please refer to the manual.

The Access Code for this unit is______________. The serial number is _____________.

You may change this access code providing you have the original or current access code. Make sure that you record the new access code in a safe place because it will be impossible to retrieve this code if lost. The factory maintains a master code to access the system in emergencies.
